Although the Valhalla DLC was a great surprise, there are still rumors about a possible Ragnarok half-sequel arriving sometime in the future. Due to Ragnarok's ending, it's believed that the half-sequel will star Atreus, but another tragic character who has drastically changed due to the harrowing events of Ragnarok could be an interesting star instead.
God of War is destined to get another sequel at some point, and when it does, it could end up flipping the Greek saga on its head in one big way.
God of War's Half-Sequel Could Star A Surprising Character
Following the heartbreaking death of Brok, his brother Sindri was overcome with grief and anger. Holding Atreus to blame, Sindri's once close relationship with Kratos' son quickly eroded, leaving Sindri filled with bitterness. Due to his rage towards Atreus, there are theories that Sindri could be the next antagonist in Ragnarok's follow-up, and this would be a fascinating angle for the half-sequel to approach with Sindri at the wheel.
Ragnarok's Half-Sequel Could Follow Sindri's Journey
Ragnarok's story left Sindri in a dark place, and this is something that deserves to be explored more. Of course, Sindri could grow to be one of the main antagonists of the next God of War title, but following him on his journey and seeing how he grows to become a villain offers a lot of opportunities to build a fascinating story.
Sindri as a God of War villain going up against Atreus, and playing as an emotionally damaged Sindri festering in his grief would be a gripping way to build sympathy for a villain who was once a great friend.
Atreus leading the rumored half-sequel is the obvious choice, but Santa Monica Studios could completely surprise fans by putting them in the shoes of the next mainline game's villain. A Ragnarok half-sequel feels inevitable at this point, and after Sindri was left out of the Valhalla DLC, the character should be explored a little bit before the events of the next chapter.
A Half-Sequel Could Explore Two God of War Stories
Although a half-sequel led fully by Sindri would be fascinating, it feels unlikely. However, the half-sequel going back and forth between Atreus and Sindri could be a great way to dive into both characters and their psyches. The end of Ragnarok made it clear that Atreus is in for a long journey, and if the half-sequel features his quest to find the Giants, Sindri is an obvious antagonist for Atreus to be confronted with.
Seeing Atreus have to fight someone who was once his close friend would be heartbreaking, but it would also be an amazing climax.
The next God of War could follow the same narrative formula that The Last of Us Part 2 pulled off by switching the gameplay back and forth between Atreus and Sindri. The future of the series remains a mystery after the ValhallaDLC, but a half-sequel leading into the mainline game's story would be a perfect opportunity for Sindri and Atreus to hash it out.
It's clear that with each new installment of God of War, the story gets larger and larger, and a half-sequel would be a great way to give Atreus and Sindri the time and attention they need while also keeping the next main God of War entry from becoming too overcrowded.
