 Nyong'o, who played the spy Nakia opposite Boseman as King T'Challa, shared a photo on Instagram of the late actor from 2018. "Three years ago today, I experienced a singular pain at the news of Chadwick Boseman's death. 


The confusion was so profound that it took months to trust the feeling of joy again," she wrote. "Death is hard to understand, maybe even harder to accept. But the love generated from the life he lived will fuel every anniversary marking his absence. Chadwick may no longer be in our photos, but he will always be in our hearts."

In addition to starring in Black Panther, Boseman made a name for himself playing historical figures, including Jackie Robinson in 42, James Brown in Get On Up and Thurgood Marshall in Marshall. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016 but continued working until his death in 2020 at the age of 43.


 His final film appearances were in Da 5 Bloods and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, the latter of which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. He was also able to voice an alternate version of T'Challa in the animated anthology What If...?, which netted him a posthumous Emmy Award for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance.


Marvel Wouldn't Recast T'Challa for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Marvel Studios was adamant that they wouldn't recast the role of T'Challa and Boseman's passing was written into the Black Panther sequel Wakanda Forever, with T'Challa himself having died from an unspecified illness and his sister Shuri (Letitia Wright) taking on the mantle of the Black Panther. 


In the time since his passing, Boseman has memorialized and honored by his alma mater, Howard University, as well as receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.


Where the Black Panther series will go after Wakanda Forever is unknown at this time. Wright has said that a third film is possible, but it won't be ready for some time.


 "If there is to be another film, which I hope there will be, I think there will be; it takes time to make it; you have to go through the script process," she said. "[Director Ryan Coogler] needs rest to think of what to put together for the next one which, he's a genius but geniuses also need rest and food. But in the meantime, 


I'm gonna be getting ready and try to put some different work out there before that time is ready." Wakanda Forever concluded with the introduction of T'Challa and Nakia's son Toussaint, played by Divine Love Konadu-Sun, indicating the legacy of Wakanda will continue on.
